Masters Sculling

Capital Rowing Club’s Sculling program offers something for scullers of all skill levels.

Overview

Capital provides structured coached programs for both recreational and competitive scullers. Because of limited availability of equipment for coached programs, space in programs is limited. Preference is given to existing members; some interested scullers may need to be placed on a waiting list.

Competitive Sculling Program

The Competitive Sculling program is designed for advanced scullers who want to focus on racing. Find out more information on the Competitive Sculling page.

Independent Sculling
Scullers who are active club members, have passed a written test covering safety, boat care, and river knowledge, and have been assessed in-person by a Capital coach on sculling skills,  river navigation, boat care, safety,  and ability to re-enter the boat after flipping may register in the Independent Sculling program. The in-person assessments are only administered during coached programs. Once the requirements have been met, equipment not being used for a coached program can be reserved no more than 24 hours in advance for a maximum of two hours. Scullers must sign out the equipment on iCrew when heading out to the water and must indicate their planned route and the name and phone number of a person who will monitor their return. Coached programs take precedence for boat use and there may be times that a reservation will be bumped for a coached program.

Club Sculling Program
The Club Sculling program helps intermediate, advanced, and competitive scullers improve their technique, conditioning, and confidence under the guidance of an experienced coach. This program accommodates several different levels of experience and rowing and fitness goals. Some club scullers are active racers and some never race at all. The program does not regularly offer sessions for those who have no rowing experience but periodically offers Sweep-to-Scull opportunities.

Learn to Scull
Capital does not regularly offer introductory sculling classes. If we are able to offer a learn-to-scull class or a sweep-to-scull class, it will be announced on the website and on social media.

Private sculling classes are currently not available.

Rack Space:

Capital offers rack spaces for members who own their boats when space is available. The waiting time for rack space is currently quite long (approximately  10 years). Contact the Sculling Rep at Sculling_Rep@CapitalRowing.org to be placed on the list.

Additional Information for Scullers:

All CRC scullers should be familiar with the Small Boats Manual. The manual includes detailed safety information, the CRC small boat inventory with weight class information, and requirements for certification as an independent sculler.
